According to legend, Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa was punished for a love affair by being tied naked to a wild horse. Over time, this legend has undergone gender transformations, culminating in the 19th century when the male character was portrayed by British actress Adah Menken on a theater stage.

Mykola Ridnyi was born in 1985 in Kharkiv and currently lives and works in Berlin, where he holds a guest professorship at Berlin University of the Arts. In 2022, he curated screening programs of Ukrainian film and video art at institutions including DAAD Gallery, MAXXI, Museum Folkwang, and National Gallery in Sofia. His practice spans performance, installations, film, video, and photography, often combining documentary and fiction through nonlinear montage and reenactment.
