Ukrainian-Danish Youth House (5-B Volodymyrska St)

Ballroom culture started in New York in the early 70s as a survival tool for Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ people, especially trans women. It was an answer to a society full of transphobia and racism, and it’s the movement that gave us Vogue (or Voguing).

What began as a response to being shut out is now a global culture that gives queer people a space where they can create, shine, and just be themselves.

Come talk about the history and present of the Ballroom culture with the organizers of the «Watch Me Serve» ballroom series in Kyiv.

The program covers:

  • How ballroom started and how it’s evolving.
  • The Black trans women and drag queens who built the culture.
  • The basics: Houses, categories and balls.
  • Why is it much more than just a party or a dance style.
  • Ballroom in movies and pop culture.
  • The rise of the Ukrainian ballroom scene.

As a bonus «Watch Me Serve» is giving away two tickets to their next event on May 3!

Speakers: Viktor Hlukh — Founder of «Watch Me Serve», dancer, DJ, Vladyslav Rekotov — Co-organizer of «Watch Me Serve», Director, Cinematographer, Drag Queen, Alexa Crystal — Performer and Representative of the Ukrainian ballroom scene.

Language: Ukrainian
